Frequently Asked Questions

What do you mean by “Christian”?

CIPA defines a Christian as someone who believes in the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; that He became incarnate, died, and rose again to pay the price for our sins and redeem our souls; and that it is only through the shed blood of Jesus Christ that we can have a relationship with God.

What do you define as the “Christian Marketplace”?

CIPA defines the Christian Marketplace as that marketplace that is served by CRA (Christian Retail Association) member retail stores – mainly individuals who hold to Catholic or Protestant beliefs and doctrines.

CIPA is an association of publishers. CIPA does not itself publish books. If you are looking for a publisher, we suggest you visit our Authors Seeking Publishers page. We also recommend that you attend a local Christian writers’ conference to learn more about getting published in the Christian marketplace.

Do you publish books or assist in getting them published?

CIPA is an association of authors and publishers. CIPA does not itself publish books. If you are looking for a publisher, we suggest you visit our Authors Seeking Publishers page. We also recommend that you attend a local Christian writers’ conference to learn more about getting published in the Christian marketplace.

Does CIPA accept international publishers as members?

If you are a publisher outside of the United States and you fit the profile of our membership requirements, then you are eligible to become a publisher member of CIPA. International members must be looking to sell their books into the Christian marketplace in the United States.

Can I join if I don’t have a book published yet?

Of course. Individuals and companies preparing to publish books for the Christian marketplace are welcome to join CIPA. We hope the benefits we offer will make your start-up phase easier.

I’m a self-published author; can I join?

If you published your titles through a subsidy or vanity press, then you can join CIPA if you are selling your book under your own name, your own ministry, or a website that you own. However, if you published your book(s) yourself, which is to say the publishing company is yours, then absolutely; we’d love to have you as a member.

How was CIPA formed?

The Christian Small Publishers Association was launched in January 2004 by integrated marketing consultant Edward Bolme; business manager Sarah Bolme; and periodical-industry veteran and Old-Testament scholar Dr. Johnny Wilson. All three are also small press owners and authors. The association’s name was changed to Christian Indie Publishing Association in January 2019 to better reflect the publishing landscape. Christian Indie Publishing Association (CIPA) is a division of Marketing Christian Books Inc.
